Our Story

Not long ago, North Star House was in ruins—abandoned, collapsing, and forgotten. The once-grand estate, designed by renowned architect Julia Morgan, had become a haven for vandals, squatters, and wildlife. Walls crumbled, windows shattered, and nature began reclaiming what was left. But the story didn’t end there. A turning point came when the property changed hands, and its new owner saw both a liability and a rare piece of history worth saving. In a remarkable act of preservation, he transferred ownership of the house and 14 acres to the Nevada County Land Trust (now Bear Yuba Land Trust), ensuring it had a future. Then, in 2015, stewardship passed to the North Star Historic Conservancy, a dedicated group determined to bring the house back to life.

Restoration has been—and continues to be—a labor of love, powered by the hands and hearts of the community. Volunteers, local businesses, and generous donors have come together to repair walls, rebuild floors, and restore the craftsmanship that once made North Star House a beacon of culture and connection. Today, the transformation is undeniable. The first floor has been beautifully restored, lush lawns once again welcome visitors, and the house is alive with activity—hosting weddings, community gatherings, and arts events. What was once a crumbling relic is now a thriving space, once again fulfilling its original purpose: bringing people together. North Star House stands as proof that history can be saved when a community believes in its future. And the story is far from over.
