Restoration

Rescuing History

The mines shut down, the Foote descendants departed, and the home sat vacant for over 20 years. The beautiful Arts & Crafts North Star House was relentlessly vandalized and near collapse when it was saved by local community members who recognized the home’s historical value

Slow and steady might well define the North Star Historic Conservancy’s progress since 2006. Many would have walked away from the damage to North Star House caused by neglect, vandalism, and the elements. It is testament to the commitment of our volunteers and greater community that North Star House is again coming into its own as a significant historic structure.

Before we even began the initial work, archival documents, blueprints, diaries and photographs relating to North Star House were collected. A local architect with an interest and background in restoration became a critical member of our team, along with local historians and organizations familiar with the history of North Star House. The application for renovation was reviewed by the California Office of Historic Preservation. Although we have not been required to have the work reviewed by their office, we continue to utilize many of California’s and National Park Service’s resource documents.

Skilled craftspeople took the lead in the downstairs’ restoration, mentoring volunteers who worked with them. Other volunteers researched and located period furnishings as well as illustrations and books by Mary Hallock Foote. The history of the landscape and gardens were explored by other volunteers, with help from local horticultural experts.

A new roof was the first order of business, followed by improved plumbing, electrical and lighting. Adding a professional caterer's kitchen, an office, and restrooms came next. Over time the windows have been rebuilt, the cedar paneled walls have been refinished, the outside siding replaced, and the damaged fireplaces restored.

Room by room, North Star House is being revitalized.
